U.S. cities such as San Antonio are now adopting large digital billboards to boost tourism, generate new revenue, and fund cultural programs. Despite concerns from preservation groups, municipalities see digital OOH as a strategic tool that stimulates economic activity and enhances city identity.

Times Square demonstrates the full potential of such media infrastructure. Though it occupies only 0.1% of New York City’s land area, it drives 18% of citywide economic output and attracts more than 330,000 daily visitors. As tourism rebounds after COVID-19, the district remains a key driver of hotel demand, entertainment spending, and overall visitor economy.

The area’s massive LED screens have become cultural landmarks, hosting both iconic commercial campaigns—such as Louis Vuitton × Yayoi Kusama’s 3D anamorphic installation—and world-renowned public art programs like Midnight Moment, where over 90 synchronized billboards turn into a large-scale digital gallery each night. Recent works by artists such as Rosa Barba and Laurie Simmons show how the facade integrates cinema, AI, and conceptual art to reach millions.

Times Square also intersects with emerging cultural ecosystems, including gaming. Collaborations with Fortnite and institutions like Serpentine Galleries demonstrate how hybrid physical–digital experiences attract next-generation audiences.

As immersive 3D, AR, and AI content expands, the media facade is evolving from a commercial platform into an experiential public space. Ultimately, Times Square illustrates how digital media architecture can transform a district into an economic engine, cultural hub, and symbolic icon—offering a benchmark for cities seeking to strengthen regional branding and activate tourism through digital signage and creative technology.
